The most unexpected Peanuts book announcement

fishieI swear, I seriously thought about writing this post for April 1st of this year, figuring all would quickly write it off as an April Fool’s announcement, and so I’d be able to tell the truth right in front of everybody and still keep the secret. But I held off, because it was a secret… and now I see that the basics have been officially released without my even noticing.

You know how you’ve been buying The Complete Peanuts, and despite that series success, it was bound to come to an end this spring, with the issue of volume 25? Well, it’s such a big hit, they’re going to keep it going.

No, I’m not kidding. The Complete Peanuts volume 26, coming out in the fall of 2016. And yes, I’m involved in putting it together (curating it along with Derrick Bang and Timothy Chow.)

What will it have in it? Peanuts. Peanuts by Schulz. Hundreds of pages of Peanuts by Schulz, material that was not in volumes 1-25… the vast majority of which has not been in a book published this century. Much of it, in fact, has never been in a book at all.

The bits of information that Fantagraphics put in their catalogue isn’t quite right as to what will be in there, as it includes some things that we were considering but didn’t end up with…. but as it stands now (with still plenty of time for alteration), it will have the comic book stories that Schulz himself drew. And plenty of other things that I could talk about, except it hasn’t been announced yet. But you will want this book. Even if you’ve stopped buying The Complete Peanuts because it has stuff you already have, or because you prefer material from the first half of the strip’s run.

And yes, there will be a boxed set of 25 and 26.

This is gonna be a good one, folks. I’m really thrilled to be telling you this, and look forward to telling you more!

Under the influence of The Wolf

I’ve talked about this a bit earlier on this blog, but now I’ve gone and made a whole video about the odd tranformation that the World War II cartoon panel “The Wolf”, aimed at American GIs, slowly evolved into a daily comic strip about a quirky bunch of neighborhood kids …

Puffer Jacket Snoopy is a thing… enough of a thing that I’ll be discussing an item that only barely qualifies for this blog (it comes with a book… a tiny book of stickers.) Amazon is now listing for October release a Desktop Inflatable Puffer Jacket Snoopy. It’s one of the …

The Return of What’s Necessary

Coming in April is a reissue of Only What’s Necessary, Chip Kidd’s second book on the art of Peanuts, reissued for the 75th anniversary of the strip. (My review of the original 2015 edition is here.) For those keeping track, this is the third cover for this book. Here are the …
