A Boy Named Charlie Brown and Snoopy Come Home DVD Review

Peanuts video expert Scott McGuire has his review up, and it’s positive. The best news is that A Boy Named Charlie Brown has 7 restored minutes that were in the original theatrical release but have been missing in all previous video releases. The “I’m never quite sure how to feel about that” news is that both films are in widescreen, in imitation of the original theatrical release, but that the films were actually animated in full-screen dimensions and cropped off for the theater and now for the DVD. This is actually true of a fair portion of more modern movie releases; they shoot for the full screen ratio and crop it for the theater. However, generally the work is designed for the cropped version to have maximum impact. So which is the “best” version, the one with more image or the one that they designed for? Danged if I know.

Unfortunately, Amazon has upped the prices (and also changed where they file the products, to the frustration of AAUGH.com website design staff – who is also the rest of the AAUGH.com staff, only he calls himself Joe Website while working on the website.) Those of you who ordered at the earlier, lower price should be getting yours soon. However, if you click through and then click the “Buy New Or Used”, you can order a new DVD from one of Amazon’s third-party suppliers for $7-$7.50, plus shipping.
