NO 1995 PEANUTS BOOK YET

It looks like between me and my elves, we got some
wires crossed, and gave some bad information about
what seemed to be a vital upcoming book.

IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL, CHARLIE BROWN is not the
long-awaited collection of the 1995 strips, the
last year not covered by the sequential collections.
That book has not yet been announced. Folks waiting
to fill out that year in their collection will have
to wait a while longer.

I apologize to anyone who made plans or placed orders
based on that information. If you preordered the book,
you can go to Amazon.com, sign in, and have that book
struck for your upcoming shipments.

WHAT “IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL” IS

This paperback is a collection of school and
education-themed strips, supposedly taken from
across the full run of the strip. While this isn’t
the first strip collection with such a theme (there’s
been CLASSROOM PEANUTS, PEANUTS IN SCHOOL, YOU’RE IN
SCHOOL NOW CHARLIE BROWN, and SALLY: SCHOOL IS MY
WORLD), it should be noted that this is a new
collection and not just a reprint of one of those
earlier collections.

If you saw A PEANUTS VALENTINE, you know that
Ballantine can do nice themed collections (and
you can be forgiven for doubting it after the
earlier A PEANUTS CHRISTMAS). I haven’t seen a
preview copy of this yet, but I have high hopes.

School-themed Peanuts books tend to be interesting,
in that they generally have an odd balance of the
characters. Unless most Peanuts collections, they
tend to have very little Snoopy and only a little
Lucy, and have far more Sally and Peppermint Patty
than you’ll see elsewhere, because school was the
key place for those characters. It’s been a while
since the last school-themed collection; I expect
this one will have a nice selection of Rerun strips
as well.

A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS AGAIN!

It’s happening again. Yet another publisher has announced
a book entitled A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS! This time, it’s
Running Press, announcing a small $4.95 hardcover edition
as part of their Miniature Editions line of pocket-sized
gift books. This puts this publisher in the same line
as World, Signet, Random House, Golden, Little Simon, and
book-and-record publishers in putting out a book with this
title. Presumably, it’s an adaptation of the classic
TV special, but whether they’ll be reformatting and
reprinting one of the existing adaptations or if it will
be an all-new book is information I don’t yet have. Or
maybe it will reprint material from A CHARLIE BROWN
CHRISTMAS: THE MAKING OF A TRADITION. Or maybe it’s
something entirely new.

My elves are looking into it. And this time, if they
give me bad information, I’m cutting off their donut
supply. BAD ELVES DON’T DESERVE DONUTS!

This new Christmas comes in October. Don’t preorder it
yet; there’ll be a surcharge if you do.

Well, that’s all the news, notes, and embarrassing
corrections for now. When there’s more news, there
will be more newsletters. And remember, send me your

If you look at this ad, you may be wondering (as I did when I stumbled across it) why Charlie Brown is advertising a television show in 1963… and why, of all shows, he’s advertising The Untouchables. (Or you may be one of the many people now populating the earth too …
