Random little catch-up items

So many little things to catch up on. So much going on… and my life is so full (my son is heading off to college this week.) What can I cover?

  • While Dolores goes unnamed in the A Summer Musical special, I am told that she is named in the Cantonese dub! It’s a translated name, but still, a character with a name is better than one without.
  • That Italian Tutto Peanuts series that I mentioned included my scans of the Charlie Brown’s Career Education Program filmstrips? Well, apparently the Spanish series Todo Snoopy is a translation of that set. However, they are issuing them out of order, and making matters worse, they are apparently soliciting them with numbers indicating the order of release, rather than the orders of the contents. For example, the Todo Snoopy seen here with the number 16 on the cover is solicited as Todo Snoopy #5. So the filmstrip material should be in the one with a 29 on the cover, but that probably won’t be Todo Snoopy #29.
  • AAUGH Blog reader Mark thought I was too gentle in noting how badly the People magazine coverage misidentified an earlier bird as Woodstock in their coverage of The Essential Peanuts. He points out that the mistake was not just in the photo caption which I showed; the text of the article itself said “Here, we meet Woodstock for the first time — even though he’d changed significantly in appearance later on.” While there’s been some controversy over the date of the first Woodstock appearance (now largely settled), it has never been seriously suggested that he appeared in the 1950s by anyone who knew what they were talking about.
  • I usually remember to check the listing for Kohl’s Cares items a few times a year, particularly when leading into Christmas, to see if they have any Peanuts items. Well, AAUGH Blog reader Bill caught that they had a Peanuts book item for October before I found it, so thanks to him for passing that info along. For $9.99 you get a stuffed Snoopy in a pumpkin shirt, plus a small book reprint of a It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown adaptation, and the profits go to charity. It’s available for order online, and the website claims it’s already in stock in stores.
  • Today in the world of blatantly-n0t-licensed, we have the Kindle book Moomin vs Snoopy: The Ultimate Showdown, with ranking comparisons of characters from each universe. (Moomin is a Finnish series about hippo-like trolls.)
  • We now have a cover for the upcoming How to Draw Peanuts for Kids. Unfortunately, my blog system has started failing to accept my image uploads (just a momentary thing, I’m sure), and you’ll have to click through to see it.

Addendum to the The Wolf video

Shortly after I posted the video about the comic strip”The Wolf” which suggested ways in which it set the path for “Peanuts”, my pal and co-writer, Schulz Museum curator Benjamin L. Clark, pointed out something I had missed — while “Willie” had offered strips run in a two-tier format before …

Unquote alone

The warning signs about the new book Rediscovering the True Meaning of Christmas with A Charlie Brown Christmas”: Celebrating Christmas with a Charlie Brown Touch starts with the title, and its curious use of a single double-quotation mark. That’s part of the name every time it’s listed, whether on the …

Candidate Snoopy

The promotion of “Snoopy for President” dates back to at least 1961 (possibly earlier, I don’t have great reference on it.) The idea is not limited to US presidential election years, but it does tend to swell then. There was not only merch but newspaper articles on it in 1968. …
