Comic-Con International: San Diego (yes, that’s it’s real name) is a week away. For those of you who are going, here are the Peanuts-related panels that are planned:
Thursday brings us Snoopy for President: Politics in Peanuts Explore the world of politics through Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip. Hear about Charlie Brown, Linus, and Pigpen’s humorous and endearing presidential campaigns and Snoopy’s short-lived term as Head Beagle. Discover why “happiness is the best policy” through Hallmark’s 1968 “Snoopy for President” sales campaign and how Schulz utilized his Peanuts characters to support numerous presidential initiatives. (Thursday July 21, 2016 3:00pm – 4:00pm, room 32AB)
Thursday will also have Bob Scott, who has worked on various Peanuts projects, participate in a Comics and Animation Story Boards discussion (Thursday July 21, 2016 2:00pm – 3:00pm, Room 25ABC)
Friday has no Peanuts panels, but Creative Associates creative director Paige Braddock will be on a panel about Queer Representation in All-Ages and Youth Media (Friday July 22, 2016 10:00am – 11:00am, Room 4)
Saturday, there’s a panel called Eisner, Kurtzman, Schulz, and Feiffer: Visualizing A Legacy where the designers of four Eisner Award-nominated books discuss designing the books that they got nominated for. This includes Chip Kidd talking about Only What’s Necessary: Charles M. Schulz and the Art of Peanuts. Note that the Eisner Awards are actually given out Friday night, so by this time, at least three of the four scheduled speakers will have lost their Eisner!
Sunday, there’s nothin’.
For those of you who have never attended Comic-Con, realize that there are more than two dozen rooms being used to host panels and showings, for most of the time all running simultaneously. There’s a lot going on, and it’s impossible not to miss most of it, it’s hard not to miss most of the things that you want to see. And that doesn’t include all the other events going on around town.
I will only be at the con Friday, so I’ll miss the one full-on Peanuts panel.
