I just wrote the whole newsletter and, before I saved
\nit, the power went out, my uninteruptible power
\nsupply failed for some reason, and now I have to
\nwrite the whole thing again.<\/p>\n

NEW BOOKS SHIPPING<\/p>\n
Several new Peanuts kids books are now shipping:<\/p>\n
CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY is a board book for the
\npreschool set. It’s about 11 inches by 10 inches,
\nwith five two-page spreads with pictures of
\nCharlie Brown and Snoopy and text gags that,
\nfrankly, are too subtle for kids (and lose some
\nof their impact as text pieces anyway.) But if
\nyou want a big book to share big pictures of
\nCB & S with the little folks, here it is:

(Of course, this book should not be confused
\nwith CHARLIE BROWN AND SNOOPY, the Fawcett
\nCrest collection of Peanuts strips. Ah, trying
\nto keep track of “&” versus “AND”, that’s what
\nbeing a Peanuts book collector is all about.)<\/p>\n
BEAGLE SCOUT SNOOPY is a stuffed Snoopy doll
\nwearing a hat and a backpack, which actually
\nopens up as a board book with 7
\ntext-and-color-image spreads telling you about
\nwhat Snoopy brings on his hike. This is a cute
\nlittle item to have.
\n

and if you like that idea, there’s a stuffed WOODSTOCK
\nwith a book backpack too. I think the design on
\nthis one is pretty nice — Woodstock’s tail actually
\nvelcroes to the back of the backpack to close it.
\nThe book is about Woodstock returning home from a trip
\nand being greeted by Snoopy. I think the character
\ndesign of this stuffed animal is a bit better, but I
\nlike Snoopy’s book better. They would both make nice
\nshelf ornaments for a Peanuts book collector, of course!

LUCY MUST BE WATCHED, CHARLIE BROWN<\/p>\n
Set your VCRs for August 29th — that’s the announced
\nU.S. air date for LUCY MUST BE TRADED, CHARLIE BROWN, an
\nall-new animated baseball-themed special. It will
\nair on ABC, who also announced that they will indeed
\nbe running the usual classic Halloween, Thanksgiving,
\nand Christmas specials as well as the more recent A
\nCharlie Brown Valentine during their appropriate upcoming
\nholiday seasons.<\/p>\n

REVIEW: LUCY’S ADVICE<\/p>\n
Another prose-and-pictures book for kids in the
\nReady-To-Read line, this is actually better than
\nthe rest. That’s because it’s largely built around
\nthe psychiatric booth gags, which are mostly text
\nby nature, and translate well into vignettes.
\nThere are still some awkwardnesses, mainly things
\nwhich have been awkwardly dumbed down for the young
\ntarget audience. Still, if you want to buy any book
\nfrom this series for your kids, this is a good one
\nto choose:

\nof a teenager and the family he tolerates, and yet within
\nthat is inventive and quite human. The drawings emphasizing
\nthe lead character’s gawkiness remind me a lot of Schulz’s
\ncartoons from Youth Magazine. Over the past five months I’ve
\nread about 5 years worth of Zits and enjoyed it thoroughly.
\nIgnore the uncomfortable name (which Schulz himself called
\n“the worst name for a comic strip since PEANUTS”) and glory
\nin these oversize books with over 500 strips apiece and
\nthe Sundays in color.

In the wake of a couple recent messages from readers,
\nI thought I might just calm people down a bit
\nregarding the planned complete Peanuts reprint set.
\nThey’re working toward it, but that work includes
\ntrying to straighten out various rights and business
\nmatters. This is not a scheduled series of books yet,
\nthis is not (at least last that I heard) a done deal.
\nIt is an intent and it is being worked towards.<\/p>\n
