R.I.P. BILL MAULDIN<\/p>\n
Bill Mauldin, acclaimed wartime and editorial cartoonist,
\npassed away last week.
\nPeanuts fans will remember Bill as
\nthe person who Snoopy went to quaff root beer with each
\nVeterans Day, as well as the only person besides Schulz
\nknown to have drawn for the Peanuts daily strip, drawing
\nhis wartime Willie and Joe characters when they encounter
\nSnoopy.
\n

\nBE MY MINI-VALENTINE, CHARLIE BROWN<\/p>\n
As mentioned in earlier newsletters, the PEANUTS VALENTINE
\nCRAFT KIT includes a book adapting the animated
\nTV special BE MY VALENTINE, CHARLIE BROWN. However, I
\nshould note that while this adaptation is done in the same
\nstyle as the other recent adaptations, it’s physically
\nsmaller, only 3\/4 the height and width of the other books
\nin the series.<\/p>\n

\nA BIRD WITH A BOOK FOR A BACKPACK?<\/p>\n
July brings two new Peanuts stuffed animals wearing books
\nas backpacks. BEAGLE SCOUT SNOOPY, dressed in the Beagle
\nScout uniform, has a book about him packing for one of
\nhis hikes. WOODSTOCK has a book about returning from his
\nannual flight south. The books are permanently attached
\nto the figures, and each has a velcro closure.<\/p>\n

\nLOOKING AT LOOKING FOR LUCY<\/p>\n
I’ve now got my copy of LOOKING FOR LUCY, the full-color
\nbooklet with pictures of all of the Lucy statues displayed
\nin St. Paul last summer. Some of the statues are so-so,
\nsome are great. My personal favorites are Lucy with a
\nstrawberry-pattern dress, dipped in chocolate, and Lucy
\nstanding behind the Mona Lisa, sticking her face through.
\nMy biggest disappointment? That none of the artists replaced
\nthe base statue’s thin, happy smile with a the classic big
\nopen yelling mouth.

\nBABY SNOOPY BOOKS ARE COMING<\/p>\n
Don’t know when, don’t know exactly what, but they are coming.

\nA NEW BOX OF BOOKS<\/p>\n
Coming in July is the SNOOPY DOGHOUSE LIBRARY, a cardboard
\ndoghouse with a plastic Snoopy permanently attached to
\nthe top. In the doghouse are three board books for the
\npre-school set: MEET SNOOPY shows Snoopy in a dozen different
\nroles, MY FAVORITE THINGS says what makes the characters
\nhappy, and finally there’s SWEET DREAMS, SNOOPY.<\/p>\n
This set is not yet available for preorder.
\n

\nAN OLD BOX OF BOOKS<\/p>\n
\nOne recent addition to the AAUGH.com reference library is a
\nboxed set of Peanuts activity books. Normally, books in a
\n“boxed set” are generally in a slipcase that one puts on the
\nshelf, moving books in and out through the open end. Not this
\none — these four books are boxed in the same sort of box
\nyou’d get a jigsaw puzzle in. You couldn’t fit these books in
\na slipcase anyway, since The Charlie Brown Ghostly Word Puzzle
\nBook and The Peanuts Mystery Maze Book are half the size of
\nThe Lucy Activity Book and The Snoopy Activity Book (and the
\nsmaller books also have fewer pages but the same $1.25 cover
\nprice as the larger books!)<\/p>\n
When sold separately, these 1979 books were published by
\nDetermined Productions, the smaller ones distributed
\nOttenheimer Publishers Inc., and the larger ones distributed
\nby the Wonder Books division of Grosset & Dunlap on behalf
\nof Ottenheimer. When offered in a box, however, they were
\noffered by Grosset & Dunlap (a Filmways company). I’m
\nstarting to plan the grand Peanuts book database, but I’ll
\nnever figure out what to put the in the Publisher field of
\nthis box’s entry.

\nSTOP BY AND SEE NAT<\/p>\n
In the San Francisco area? Then stop by the Alternative Press
\nExpo, a comics convention specializing in the smaller
\npublishers and more personal works. It’s this coming Saturday
\nand Sunday, February 1 and 2. I’ll be there, selling copies
\nof my Panel One book of comic book scripts and my The Factor
\nminiseries, showing previews of Panel Two and my new
\nLicensable BearTM comic, and generally being a happy guy. Be

\nWell, that’s the news for now. Yes, it’s heavy with kiddie
