\nCHARLIE BROWN. This is the latest in the
\nReady-to-Read line of kids pictures-and-text
\nbooks. It’s one of the weaker installments
\nin the series; the strips used didn’t
\ntranslate that well to the story format.
\n(Certainly, Charlie Brown losing a spelling
\nbee by spelling “maze” as “M-A-Y-S” is a
\ngag that will be lost on a generation too
\nyoung to remember Willie Mays.) Get this one
\nfor your collection, or get it if your kids
\nliked the previous volumes, but otherwise
\nyou can skip it.

\nFIRST PRINTING, FIRST BOOK<\/p>\n
Unlike many book collectors, I’m really not that
\nconcerned about owning first printings of books.
\nUnless the book has changed in some way, I’m
\njust as happy with the thirteenth printing.
\nWith my upcoming talks at the Schulz Museum,
\nhowever, I realized that I’m not just a collector,
\nI’m a Peanuts book historian. At least, that’s
\nwhat I told myself when trying to convince myself
\nthat I really should splurge and buy myself a
\nfirst printing of the very first Peanuts book
\nfrom 1952, entitled simply PEANUTS.<\/p>\n
Identifying the first printing is tricky, because
\nthe cover of the book didn’t change much until
\nthe 32nd printing, 20 years later, and the
\nearly printings did not always list the printing
\nnumber on the copyright page. The surest sign of
\na first printing (I am told) is that there is an
\nR-in-a-circle logo on the copyright page, about
\nhalf an inch high.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, in today’s world of online auctions,
\nyou don’t always get to see the copyright page.
\nHere are some other clues that will help you
\nrule out most of the later printings easily, just
\nfrom looking at the cover:<\/p>\n
1) The publisher of the first printing is RINEHART &
\nCO., INCORPORATED, rather than the HOLT, RINEHART,
\nAND WINSTON, INC. on some later printgings. However,
\nmost printings of this book were from that first
\npublisher, so don’t get too excited by the name.<\/p>\n
2) There is no price printed on the cover (although
\nthe copy may have a price rubber-stamped on it,
\nlike mine does.) Most of the later editions have
\na cover price of $1.00 clearly marked on the cover.
\nIn fact, some printings have the cover price on
\nthe front cover twice! (They didn’t raise the price
\nuntil 1972, when it went to $1.25.)<\/p>\n
3) There is no title on the spine. They would add
\nthe word PEANUTS to the spine with a later
\nprinting.
\n

\nWell, that’s the news and info for this issue.
\nYes, I know that I promised you some information
\non another Peanuts guide to golf, but, ummmm…
\nI lost it. It’s probably within 3 feet of me
\nat this very moment, but it’s a tiny little
\nwhite thing lost among a sea of papers. I’ll
