{"id":6130,"date":"2020-10-06T17:18:46","date_gmt":"2020-10-07T00:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aaugh.com\/wordpress\/?p=6130"},"modified":"2021-04-28T08:37:13","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T15:37:13","slug":"its-a-song-of-a-parody-not-a-parody-of-a-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aaugh.com\/wordpress\/2020\/10\/its-a-song-of-a-parody-not-a-parody-of-a-song\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s a song of a parody, not a parody of a song"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had never really looked into\u00a0<em>The Mad Show<\/em>, a 1960s off-broadway musical hit based on\u00a0<em>Mad<\/em>, the satirical comics magazine, but I happened to look at its Wikipedia page for some reason, and there I saw, in the song listings, &#8220;Misery Is&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now, this isn&#8217;t the song that anyone talks about from\u00a0<em>The Mad Show<\/em>; despite having run for years, the main reason anyone mentions the show these days is that one song in it was pseudonymously written by Stephen Sondheim&#8230; but this is not that song. (That one is &#8220;The Boy From&#8230;&#8221;) So I called out &#8220;Alexa, play &#8216;Misery&#8230;&#8217; Is from <em>The Mad Show<\/em>&#8220;, and no, I&#8217;m not just being crazy, I actually have a device that responds to such things. With a little negotiation, I got it to play the song. And it wasn&#8217;t something trying to be a note-for-note match with the song &#8220;Happiness&#8221; from\u00a0<em>You&#8217;re a Good Man, Charlie Brown<\/em>, but it was in that spirit, with three kids (or actors, including Linda Lavin and Paul Sands, playing kids) singing about the things that caused misery. So I reckoned they were poking a bit of fun at the hot off-Broadway show of the moment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aaugh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MadShowListing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6131 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/aaugh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MadShowListing-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aaugh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MadShowListing-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/aaugh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MadShowListing.jpg 257w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Only, that didn&#8217;t work. While their off-Broadway runs overlapped, it was actually\u00a0<em>The Mad Show<\/em> that came out first, hitting the Off White Way in 1966, while Charlie Brown would not land there until the following year. And this song wasn&#8217;t tacked in later, it was on <a id=\"amznPsBmLink_6526768\" class=\"amzn_ps_bm_tl\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0007514HQ\/ref=as_li_bk_tl\/?tag=aaugh-20&amp;linkId=0963678cf7fca2a84750e03b38abbb85&amp;linkCode=ktl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-amzn-ps-bm-keyword=\"The Mad show\" data-amzn-link-id=\"0963678cf7fca2a84750e03b38abbb85\">the 1966 Original Cast soundtrack <\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"amznPsBmPixel_6526768\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; height: 0px !important; width: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?source=bk&amp;t=aaugh-20&amp;bm-id=default&amp;l=ktl&amp;linkId=0963678cf7fca2a84750e03b38abbb85&amp;_cb=1602028819370\" alt=\"\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" border=\"0\" \/>recording. &#8220;But wait!&#8221; I hear you cry, &#8220;might they be parodying the song from its first appearance, the 1966 <em>You&#8217;re a Good Man, Charlie Brown<\/em> concept album that served as the basis for the stage musical?&#8221; Checking the jacket notes for the original Mad Show recording, it mentions that it was a recording of the musical numbers as of January 6th, 1966&#8230; so no, it&#8217;s not possible.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0<em>The Mad Show<\/em> is, as I said, coming from the magazine <em>Mad<\/em>&#8230; and in their July 1963 issue, <em>Mad<\/em> did their send-up of the book\u00a0<em>Happiness is a Warm Puppy<\/em>, called\u00a0<em>Misery is a Cold Hot Dog<\/em>. They labeled it as coming from their &#8220;Roasted Peanuts&#8221; department, and it featured characters from other comic strips, in addition to Charlie Brown. (The piece has been reprinted several times since.)
