THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT<\/p>\n
I’ve been faced with a dilemma. Many of you know that
\nI’m a publisher, putting out books and comic books
\nunder the About Comics imprint. As a publisher, I like to
\nwait until I have all the info I can get before I announce
\na project, and pick the time when it will best help sales.<\/p>\n
But as the AAUGH.com guy, I like to announce Schulz
\nprojects as soon as possible. You folks like having the
\ninformation, and I like bringing it to you. If I knew about
\na project coming from some other publisher, I’d announce
\nit unless I’d promised not to. And even though it may not
\nbe the most prudent move, here goes:<\/p>\n
During a creatively fertile period in the late 1950s, Charles
\nSchulz created another comics feature. “It’s Only A Game”
\nwas a single panel gag comic focused on sports and games.
\nIt ran a little over a year, and to the best of my knowledge,
\nnot a single panel of it has ever been reprinted in a book.<\/p>\n
Later this year, that will change.<\/p>\n
Details of date and format are still being worked out, but
\ntoward the end of this year, expect the first book ever of
\nIT’S ONLY A GAME.<\/p>\n
Published by About Comics, my company. So forgive me
\nfor feeling this is a big one.

\nLI’L FOLKS IN FEBRUARY<\/p>\n
A release date has now been announced for CHARLES M.
\nSCHULZ: LI’L BEGINNINGS, the collection of “Li’l
\nFolks” and other pre-Peanuts cartoons by Schulz. The
\nbook will be available starting February 21, and
\ncan be had purchased only at the Charles M. Schulz
\nMuseum And Research Center or via the museum’s
\nwebsite.<\/p>\n
The museum is making an event out of this. February
\n21-22 Derrick Bang, who wrote the commentary and
\nannotations for this book, will be giving talks and
\nsigning the book at the museum. You can see more

Now, for you comic fans who may be considering making
\na trip out for this, let me give you an added reason.
\nThat same weekend, San Francisco (a mere hour away)
\nis hosting the Alternative Press Expo, a convention
\nfor the alternative\/independent comic book crowd. You
\nwon’t find a lot of superhero material there, but
\nthee will be lots of creators and publishers of other
\nsorts of comics.<\/p>\n
So you can take a weekend, spend part of it in
\nSanta Rosa taking in the museum, and spend part
\nof it in San Francisco taking in APE and the
\nother unique joys of that city. I know that’s what
\nI’m going to do. (In fact, if anyone is going to
\neither event, please feel free to say “hi” if you
\nsee me. I won’t have a table at the convention,

\nIT’S BASEBALL, CHARLIE BROWN<\/p>\n
Lately I’ve been fielding questions about whether
\nthe upcoming WHO’S ON FIRST, CHARLIE BROWN? strip
\ncollection is baseball-themed or the long-hoped-for
\ncollection of strips from 1995.<\/p>\n
Well, given that the cover says that it features
\nbaseball strips and that it has an intro by
\nbaseball great Cal Ripken, Jr., I think we have
\nthe answer.<\/p>\n

\nA BIGGER VALENTINE FOR CHARLIE BROWN<\/p>\n
Peanuts animation expert Scott McGuire, who has
\nan excellent guide to the various movies, TV
\nspecials and the like at

\nbrings us interesting news. The newly-released
\nvideo version of A CHARLIE BROWN VALENTINE is
\nactually four minutes longer than what you’ve
\nseen on TV. The producers actually made a 25
\nminute special and cut it down to 21 minutes
\nfor TV airing. Apparently, they’ve done this
\nwith other recent specials as well, keeping the
\nlength of the new ones more in line with the
\nlength of the early classic specials. So we can
\nexpect further expanded editions to come.<\/p>\n

\nKIDS BOOKS REVIEWS<\/p>\n
BABY SNOOPY’S VALENTINE is a board book about
\nBaby Snoopy (the infantilized version of
\nSnoopy made for licensing purposes) bringing
\na valentine to Baby Woodstock. The thing
\nthat makes this interesting is that each of
\nthe six thick cardboard pages is a different
\nshape, making the book as a whole a 3-D
\nimage of Baby Snoopy holding his valentine.
\n(Snoopy, being younger than normally depicted,
\nis using valentines here as a friendship
\nsymbol, as opposed to the older Snoopy we
\nall know for whom valentines represent all
\nthe ladies out there who still have a thing
\nfor him.)<\/p>\n

SNOOPY’S FEELINGS is another board book. This
\none has all the pages shaped the same, but it
\nhas a raised plastic image of Snoopy’s head
\non the cover. The inside is just a series of
\nimages showing Snoopy expressing different
\nfeelings – cool, surprised, relaxed, excited,
\nsad, happy, hungry, satisfied, angry, and
\nsleepy. (Oh, dang, I gave away the ending!)<\/p>\n

Little Simon had announced PEANUTS: A POP-UP
\nCELEBERATION, originally planned for sometime

\nhalf a dozen pop-ups based on the key tropes
\nof the strip, accompanied by the strips
