Books about Peanuts History and Peanuts Stuff
- Charles Schulz : Cartoonist and Creator of Peanuts by Michael Schuman -- a biography of
Schulz aimed at the Young Adult market, part of the People To Know series. This book of around 20,000 words is clearly the best of the youth-oriented Schulz biographies, and I recommend it to Peanuts fans 10-15 years old who are eager readers.
- Charles Schulz by Jim Whiting (not the cartoonist, but a writer of the same name) is another biography of Schulz aimed at the school library market, part of the Real-Life Reader Biography series. About 3000 words long, readable, and generally accurate, it's probably fine for those around ages 8 to 11.
- Charles Schulz by
Mae Woods. This is a biography for children, part of the Checkerboard Biography
Library of Children's Authors series. It has less than 2000 words, so if you're
looking for an informative bio, this ain't it. It's easy to read, and the hard
cover is designed to survive all the pressures
of a school library.
- Charles Schulz by Cynthia Amoroso and Robert B. Noyed. Apparently a reprint of an earlier 24 page hardbound biography aimed at first graders, which had only about 200 words of text, and even then they got things wrong. Recommended only for the obsessive collector.
- Charles Schulz by Barbara Marvis,
who specializes in non-fiction for middle-school at-risk readers. This one
is a bit over 1000 words.
- Charles M. Schulz,
by Cheryl Carlson. a biography of the creator of Peanuts, aimed at 2nd-3rd
graders. Part of the First Biographies line.
- Charles M. Schulz: Conversations, edited by M. Thomas Inge, collects selected interviews with Schulz to paint a picture of the
man, his views, and his career. Available as an affordable paperback or a long-lasting hardcover.
- A Charlie Brown Christmas: The
Making of a Tradition tells the tale of the making of the most beloved animated
special of all time. Written by producer Lee Mendelson, with the cooperation
of Schulz and animator
Bill Melendez, this is available in hardcover and
paperback.
- Good Grief : The Story of Charles M. Schulz; by Rheta Grimsley Johnson; paperback; --this biography of Schulz doesn't shy away from the darker parts of his life, and thus brings out a sense of a full, real man that some of the earlier biographies missed. Recommended.
- How to Draw Peanuts shows simple methods of drawing
Peanuts characters in specific poses. NOTE:
no matter what the cover of this book and the online listings for this book say, this book is not by
Charles M. Schulz! This book was created after Schulz's death by talented artist Matt Busch.
- It's
the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown: The Making of a Television Classic,
a paperback look at the making of the show
- My Life with Charlie Brown, Schulz's various bits of writing about his own life are brought together into a single work, edited into an autobiography of sorts.
- Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz is available both as a hardcover and as an expanded-length (32 new pages, 4 old pages removed) paperback.
This impressive book put together by the award-winning Chip Kidd looks at the art of
a great cartoonist. It has hundreds of strips, example of Schulz's pre-Peanuts work, sketchbooks, and more!
- Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography, a hefty serious biography of the
cartoonist, written by the acclaimed biographical writer David Michaelis.
Available in hardcover, paperback, and
as an audiobook
on CD.
- Security Blankets, a look at how Peanuts changed people's lives.
- Sparky: The Life and Art of Charles Schulz - a biography aimed at the younger set.
