Currently, this list covers Peanuts strip reprint books and books of original Peanuts work bypublisher (WR=Weekly Reader, SB=Scholastic Books, both of whom have put out editions of various books fo Charles Schulz. Other Peanuts-related books are covered in other pages of this guide. This isn't an all-editions bibliography, so publishers are not listed, except when I have an edition put out by a non-standard r sales via schools). Asterisks (*) indicate ones that I have. Other abbreviations are HB for hardcover, and CB for Charlie Brown.

Big thanks to those who've helped, with both bibliographic information (particularly fellow Peanuts biblionauts Scott McGuire and Derrick Bang) and books themselves (Dr. Sue Kost sacrificed a fine collection to the cause).

Peanuts strip reprints fans should be aware that trading cards reprinting classic Peanut strips were released. There are 100 cards in each of two series; ten series were intended, but they stopped producing them.

If you have any suggestions on format of this list, drop me a note--but I'm not ready to list all the printings, all the different publishers, etc. for all these books. If someone else wants to, be my guest!

HOLT "FULL" BOOKS

This is the original series of Peanuts reprints, started in 1952 by Rinehart & Co. and continued into the 1970's by the same company (by then long-since renamed Holt, Rinehart, and Winston). These are 8 inches high by 5 inches across, except for the earlier printings of some Sunday-strip-only books, which are 5 inches high by 8 inches across. (These sideways books reproduce the whole first panel, which is dropped out of all the non-sideways books.) The contents of these books have been reworked into a number of other formats, such as Fawcett Crest half-books, Peanuts Parades, Peanuts Classics, and The World of Charlie Brown. See the primary collection grid to see how the portions are reworked in the different series. Many of these books were reprinted in hardcover by Weekly Reader, but many of those editions are abridged; see the Weekly Reader abridgement guide for details on identifying these volumes.

PEANUTS PARADE

The Peanuts Parade numbered series of 7 by 10 inch paperbacks took over from the "full" books. There are two sorts of Parade volumes: new strip collections, and books that reprint the contents of one-and-a-half full books. This is probably the favorite series amongst collectors. See the primary collection grid to see how the contents of these books align with the contents of other series.

    • Speak Softly and Carry a Beagle (abridged from the Parade book for Weekly Reader) * (HB-WR) ; if someone offers to sell you a hardcover of Speak Softly, this is probably what you'll be getting, a small and shortened version.

PEANUTS COLLECTOR SERIES

These, published by Topper Books, took the place of the "full books" for the strips from 1985 through 1988. They vary in sizes. The date in parenthesis indicates the date of the strips.

  • Dogs Don't Eat Dessert (85) *
  • You're on the Wrong Foot Again, CB (85) *
  • By Supper Possessed (86) * (Ravette British ed)
  • Talk is Cheep, CB (86-87) *
  • It Doesn't Take Much to Attract A Crowd (87) * (Ravette British ed)
  • If Beagles Could Fly (87-88) *
  • Don't Be Sad, Flying Ace (87-88) Note: some of the Sunday strips in this volume have panels blatantly out of order*
  • Could You Be More Pacific? (88) *

    ANDREWS & MCMEEL REPRINT SERIES

Andrews & McMeel briefly took over the serial reprinting of the strips, with 2 in the square format that they use to reprint just about everything plus one larger book. These are:
    • Make Way for the King of the Jungle ('89) *
    • Being a Dog Is a Full-Time Job ('89-'90) *
    • Around the World in 45 Years ('93-'94)(larger book, with commentary) *

    PEANUTS TREASURY

After a long period without any new sequential reprints, Harper Perennial suddenly (and delightfully) started issuing year-by-year collections. Each volume has about 300 dailies (missing about a dozen over the course of the year) and about 12 Sundays (missing about 40) These are:
    • Now, That's Profound, Charlie Brown ('91) *
    • I Told You So, You Blockhead ('92) *
    • Dogs Are Worth It ('93; overlaps with Around The World in 45 Years)
    • The World Is Filled With Mondays ('94; overlaps with Around The World in 45 Years) *

    BALLANTINE'S BOOKS

Ballantine Books took over the sequential reprint books for the last five years of the strip, and issued them in reverse order. These books are intended to be complete, covering all the strips for the year (or, in the case of Peanuts 2000, for the year-and-change.)
    • Peanuts 2000 ('99-2000) in color, even the dailies. The first printing is missing the finale "farewell" daily and Sunday strips; the second printing includes the Sunday version. * (First printing)
    • It's a Dog's Life, Snoopy (1998) *
    • It's a Big World, Charlie Brown (1997, with the last two strips of 1996) *
    • The World According To Lucy (1996) * Not to be confused with the small Hallmark hardcover of the same title
    • It Was A Dark And Stormy Night, Snoopy (1995) *

    FAWCETT CREST "HALF BOOKS"

The Fawcett Crest line of standard paperback-sized books are the longest-running series of Peanuts reprints, starting in the early 1960s with The Wonderful World of Peanuts and ending with the last new title (Lead On, Snoopy) in 1991. A few titles remain in print to this day. Despite there being 100 titles in this series, it never reprinted as much as a single strip that hadn't previously been reprinted in some other book. Each book was made up of selections from another book. At first, each book contained half the strips from one of the "full" books. Next, they would reprint 1/3 of the contents of a Peanuts Parade book. The last dozen each reprinted either 2/3s of a volume from the Peanuts Collector Series, or 1/3 each of two separate volumes. See the primary collection grid to see how the contents of these books align with the contents of other series.

    PEANUTS CLASSICS

Peanuts Classics is the current series reprinting material that was originally published in 1984 or before. Each 5 by 8 inch volume reprints the contents of one "full" book, 2/3rds of a Parade book, or 1/3 each of two separate Parade books. The editing on these books are quite sloppy, with strips meeting and other strips repeated; because of this, collectors seem to look askance at this series, although there is some interest in the first printings because they were printed on acid-free paper that should stay clean and white for quite a long time.. For a full guide to how the content of these books align with the contents of other book series, see the primary collection grid. Note: The titles on most of these books are taken from the "full" or Parade book they reprint; you can identify the Peanuts Classics version because it says Peanuts Classics on the cover.

The first printing of each volume was printed on acid-free paper, which should make it withstand the ravages of time better than the later printings which were on cheaper stock.

    DOUBLE VOLUME EDITION

These are flip books, with two half books on opposite sides from each other. Interestingly, they chose to make the two half books taken from the same whole books into this, so in effect these have the same strips as certain whole books. Listed variously as Peanuts Double Volume Edition and Fawcett Double Volume Edition.

  • The Wonderful World of Peanuts/Hey, Peanuts! * (Same contents as More Peanuts)
  • Good Grief, CB/For the Love of Peanuts * (same contents as Good Grief, More Peanuts)

    THE WORLD OF CHARLIE BROWN

This is an odd duck of a set. It is nine hardcover books, each containing the contents of two Holt, Rinehart, Winston full books. They were issued as a boxed set by the toy manufacturer Mattel.

    BEST-IN-BOOKS FULL BOOK ABRIDGEMENTS

Best-in-Books was a hardback series (similar to Reader's Digest Condensed Books), collecting abridgements and excerpts of several books into a single volume. On a number of volumes, these included excerpts from Peanuts strip collections. They would do multiple excerpts from the same Peanuts book. I have listed them here by the title of the first book listed on the book's spine, as well as by the volume number which is in the indica. (I suspect there are a number more than what is listed here; for a while, I was working under the misconception that there would only be one volume containing excerpts from any one Peanuts book.)

    • #13 The Breaking Wave (excerpts from both Peanuts and More Peanuts) *
    • #24a Twilight for the Gods (Excerpts Good Ol' CB) *
    • #28 The Wind in the Forest (Excerpts Good Ol' CB) *
    • #33 Our Man in Havana (excerpts Snoopy) *
    • #36 The Town House (excerpts Snoopy) *
    • #37 Nine Coaches Waiting (excerpts You're out of Your Mind, CB) *
    • #42 The Silver Chalice (excerpts Peanuts; also includes an excerpt from Kids Say The Darndest Things, including Schulz illustrations) *

    CHICAGO TRIBUNE FULL BOOK EXCERPTS

In 1968, the Chicago Tribune newspaper included paper booklets in some of its Sunday editions. These were 16 pages long, unbound. Each interior page and the back cover reprinted 2 pages from a full book, with color added. The reader had to cut and probably even fold pages in order to make the book; the only copies I have access to have already been built.

    • At Home With Snoopy (excerpts You Need Help, Charlie Brown; published March 10, 1968) *
    • You Had It Coming, Charlie Brown! (excerpts The Unsinkable Charlie Brown; published July 7, 1968) *

    BALLANTINE BIG BOOKS

These collections were not made for standard book distribution; the Collections hardcovers appeared in big-box stores in 2006, and the paperback two-in appeared in bargain book piles in 2008.

    • Peanuts Collection (includes It's a Dog's Life, Snoopy; It's a Big World, Charlie Brown; Peanuts 2000) * (HB)
    • More Peanuts Collection (includes non-primary book Who's On First, Charlie Brown; plus The World According to Lucy; It Was a Dark and Stormy Night, Snoopy) * (HB)
    • It's a Dog's Life, Snoopy/It's a Big World, Charlie Brown *

    • Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz This is a great book, but an odd strip reprint. All of the strips are photographed either from aged, yellowed newspaper clippings, or from the original art. It also includes samples of Schulz's pre-Peanuts strip, plenty of sketches and designs, and photos of other Peanuts items. Please note that a few factual errors are in these books, which you can see on my error list.
