Peanuts stories in Comic Books

Begun, 1998. December 22nd, 2007 revision. Copyright 1998-2007 Nat Gertler & Dr Michael J. Vassallo.

The Peanuts comic strip began at a time when comic books (by which I mean magazines, not strip reprint books, which are covered on a different list) were much more popular than they are today. It should come as little surprise, then, that the Peanuts characters became inhabitants of this popular medium.

The following guide to the Peanuts comic book appearances is based on Dr. Michael J. Vassallo's article in Comics Buyer's Guide issue 1254, which is now online here. His material is used here with his generous permission and addition of further information.

The Peanuts material in comic books can be broken into three categories:

  • Newspaper reprints which simply reprint installments of the Peanuts strip from the daily paper (with color added to the daily strips). For a good list of which dates strips are reprinted, see this Peanuts Collector Club page.
  • Original comic book stories are brand new tales of the Peanuts characters. While Schulz is purported to have drawn one of them and is suspected of a second, the creative chores on most of these were handled first by Jim Sasseville and then, for most of the run, by Dale Hale, two folks who worked out of Schulz's studio. The drawing style and characterization in these stories do not precisely match Schulz's. Later stories appear to be drawn by someone else, and we're continuing to investigate to figure out who the artist was; it was possibly someone hired by Dell rather than someone working at Schulz's studio.
  • Comic book story reprints are simply reprintings of earlier original comic book stories.

Many of these comics have original Peanuts covers.

Runs not fully confirmed. Black text=confirmed Peanuts appearance. White text=no Peanuts. Gray text=not yet checked.
