Schulz's other strips in reprint books

Begun 2000. June 25th, 2008 revision

Charles Schulz worked on a number of comics strips over the years, besides Peanuts. Best known of these is Li'l Folks, the single-panel newspaper gag series that he did before Peanuts. While a few scattered Li'l Folks strips have shown up in various historically-themed Peaunts books, there is just one book focusing on Li'l Folks, and it collects all of them:

Li'l Folks collections

  • Charles M. Schulz: Li'l Beginnings * Book also has various other pre-Peanuts Schulz works

The late 1950s brought about It's Only A Game, a short-lived gag panel that Schulz did with the uncredited collaboration of Jim Sasseville. Again, there is only one book collecting these, and it has the complete collection.

It's Only A Game collections

  • It's Only a Game * Book has commentary by collaborator Jim Sasseville. Ah, let me get off being fair and impartial here. This book is published by About Comics, which is my publishing company. I'm quite proud of this little volume. Go, buy a copy!

However, the non-Peanuts work of Schulz that has been most reprinted is the series of single-panel gags that he did for the Church Of God, appearing primarily in their magazine Youth. These panels, occasionally refered to by the horrible name Teen-nuts but more properly called Young Pillars, have been collected in a number of books over the years. I heartily recommend reading any of these you can lay your hands on.

Youth magazine teen-ager strips original collections

Note: Some people list the book Two By Fours with these books. However, the cartoons in that book (which are about little kids, not teenagers) are original illustrations, not reprints.
  • "Teenager" Is Not A Disease *
  • What Was Bugging Ol' Pharaoh? *
  • Young Pillars *

Re-collections

These books contain mainly cartoons that appeared in the earlier collections, although they may contain some cartoons not in those collections.
  • Teen-Agers Unite! *
  • I Take My Religion Seriously *
  • Schulz's Youth * hardcover and softcover (contains all of the previously-reprinted Youth magazine cartoons, plus some never-before-reprinted ones, plus all the Two By Four cartoons, plus the cartoons from a Church of God youth gathering, plus the never-before-in-any-book cartoons from Reach magazine. The one book you need. And yes, I'm the publisher.)

Reuse of the art

The art from the Youth strips has occasionally been reused for single illustrations. These are pretty minor uses, and mostly don't use the original Schulz captions. Usually, I wouldn't mark something with this little Schulz on my lists, but I thought these might be of interest to someone.
  • "Parents, Ugh!" * (book; 2 panels)
  • Responding to God's Call... * (book by Gene W. Newberry; 10 panels)
  • Deciding for Myself - A Resource for Junior Highs * (book; 6 panels, published by the Anglican Church of Canada; Schulz's name is misspelled both time it appears)
  • Understanding Youth * (pamphlet)
  • How To Use Your Quarterly With Youth * (pamphlet)
  • What is My Role? * (pamphlet)
  • You Can Learn to Pray! * (pamphlet)
  • How Youth Learn * (pamphlet)
