Peanuts prose and picture books

Begun 2000. June 18th, 2023 revision

While the Peanuts books appeared in 1952, for the first decade all the books were strip reprints. This all changed with 1962, when Happiness is a Warm Puppy appeared. This book alternated pages with adages and aphorisms with illustrations matched to those sayings. The extreme success of this book ensured that there would be many more such prose-and-picture books to come.

ORIGINAL STORY BOOKS

These have all-new illustrations to tell stories. In some cases, the stories are basically reworked from strip storylines.
  • Charlie Brown's Christmas Stocking (I hesitate to list this, because even though it was promoted as a "bonus book", it is really a 16 page pamphlet bound into the December 1963 issue of Good Housekeeping. However, it's existence really should be noted, as it's an original 15-panel story by Schulz, told with drawings and captioned dialogue.) *
  • "I Never Promised You an Apple Orchard" The Collected Writings of Snoopy * (HB)
  • Snoopy and his Sopwith Camel * (HB)
  • Snoopy and "It Was a Dark and Stormy Night" * (HB)
  • Snoopy and the Red Baron * (HB)
  • Snoopy's Grand Slam * (HB)
  • Yes, Santa, There is a Charlie Brown Reworked strip content with what looks like 19th century backgrounds* (HB)

ORIGINAL POP-UP BOOKS

These books with 3-D pop-up or motion on each page were published by Hallmark or Determined. They are all hardcovers.
  • Christmas Time with Snoopy and his Friends * (HB; worn and many items broken)
  • It's Good to Have a Friend * (HB)
  • Love A La Peanuts * (HB)
  • The Peanuts Philosophers * (HB)
  • Snoopy and the Twelve Days of Christmas * (HB)
  • Snoopy's Secret Life

AMBASSADOR FRIENDSHIP LIBRARY

Minibooks put out by Ambassador Cards, which is apparently a division of Hallmark. Not really separate text and art, but mostly greeting card-like thoughts using word balloons and speech balloons combined with Schulz art (presumably recycled.) There are also volumes in this series which are strip reprints, and are covered on the strip reprint page. I expect there's more in this set that I've not yet seen. (If you think getting the list this far was easy, you're wrong.)
  • Everybody And His Dog Wishes You A Happy Birthday *
  • I'm Thinking Of You *
  • It's The Thought That Counts * Not really adages, actually a short original story
  • A Letter From Me
  • May I Offer You Some Free Advice? *
  • The Wisdom of Linus

HALLMARK MINIBOOKS

Hallmark had a number of series of minibooks. Some of them are strip reprints and are included on the appropriate list. Some of the ones listed here are aphorism books, while others have more of a storyline. The artwork is probably reused from other sources, but I can't say that for certain.
  • THOUGHTFULNESS LIBRARY

    • All About Birthdays * (This is an edited-down version of another Hallmark book with the same name but which does not say Thoughtfulness Library on the back; individual panels and sayings)
    • A Friend Is *
    • Happy Birthday Person To Person *
    • I Would Have Written Sooner But... *
    • It Shouldn't Happen To You... Let Alone A Dog! * Possibly only offered in Great Britain
    • Reflections of You
    • Snoopy's Home Medical Advisor *
    • This Is Your Day
    • What Makes This Country So Great? *
    • You're What This World Needs *
  • MEMENTOES

    • The Very Best Dad of All *
    • All I Want For Christmas Is... * larger than the minibook edition
    • Wishing You a Very Merry Christmas * larger than the minibook edition
  • NO SERIES NAME

    • All About Birthdays * (See the Thoughtfulness Library listings for an abridgement of this book.)
    • All About Friendship *
    • Thoughts on Getting Well * (HB)
    • A Peanuts Valentine ???Not sure if this belongs here or elsewhere.

EVERHART QUOTE BOOKS

These books don't used Schulz Peanuts illustrations. Instead, they use reproductions of the paintings of Tom Everhart (the only fine artist licensed to use the Peanuts characters) to accompany themed collections of quotes. This series of books also had a journal and an address book, but I'm trying not to track such things. Yet.
  • Friends Stick Together *
  • More Than Puppy Love *
  • Special Days Send Me Flying *
  • To Every Dog There Is A Season *
