Primary Peanuts Reprint books: a handy grid guide

Begun 1997. December 65th, 2006 revision.

At various times, different lines of books have served as the primary Peanuts strip reprints; i.e., they have consisted primarily or solely of strips that had not appeared in books before. There have also been other lines of books that have repackaged material from the primary books in some organized format, either splitting a primary book into smaller books or collecting material from two primary books into a larger book. Some of these repackagings are imperfect, missing a small number of strips from the original either due to format restrictions or editorial error, but for the most part they make an effective way to build a good Peanuts library.

This grid attempts to organize the following standard reprint series:

  • Full books is my name for the first series of Peanuts books. These are paperback books, 5 inches by 8 inches.
  • Fawcett books, are the standard paperback-sized books published Fawcett, at first under their Crest imprint and then simply as Fawcett Crest. Fawcett took each primary strip reprint book and broke it down into multiple smaller books.
  • Peanuts Parade books are 7 inches by 10 inches, and have 50% more strips than a full book. There are two types of Parade books; some reprints one and a half full books, while others are primary strip reprints. A Peanuts Parade book can be identified both by its size and by the fact that it says Peanuts Parade on the cover. All 29 Peanuts Parade books are numbered in the order of release. (Note: the first printings of #11, Speak Softly And Carry A Beagle, are not numbered and do not have Peanuts Parade on the cover.)
  • Peanuts Classics are the same size and length as the full books. There are three basics types of Classics: ones that reprint an entire Full book, ones that reprint 2/3s of one of the primary reprint Parade books, and ones that reprint 1/3 of one primary reprint Parade book and 1/3 of another. Peanuts Classics often take the name of the book they're reprinting, even if they're not reprinting the whole book. This can cause confusion, but the Classics are easy to identify, since they say "Peanuts Classics" right on the cover. (Do not confuse the hardback book entitled Peanuts Classics with the Peanuts Classics book line.) These books unfortunately multiply the errors made in previous editions, with missing strips and miscollated books. However, they are the only editions of much of this work which is still in print.
  • Weekly Reader published hardback versions of various full books. Unfortunately, they chose to abridge many of them, without marking them as abridged. Even worse, some books were issued in both abridged and unabridged editions. The effort to identify which volumes they published, which were available as abridged and which were unabridged is a new one. This column of information is the one unfinished part of this grid.
  • The World of Charlie Brown is a boxed set of books published by the toy manufacturer Mattel, offered through a mail-order deal. The full set has 9 books, with each book reprinting two full books in a flip-book format. All told, 17 primary strip books are reprinted, plus the themed book Snoopy.
  • Peanuts Collector Series is a series of primary strip reprint books published by Topper Books. They vary in size, but are all wider than they are high.
  • Andrews & McMeel published three primary strip reprint books, which are still available.
  • Peanuts Treasury is a 1990s line of sequential strip reprints, published by Harper Collins.
  • Ballantine Books were the primary strip collections for the last five years of the strip.
  • Ballantine Big Books are larger hardcover collections of the Ballantine Books, distributed to big box stores.

Using this chart:

The first column shows the primary strip reprint book. Next is the years of the strips reprinted in the book. The remaining columns are used to show which books in the other series cover the material in the primary book. For example, if we were to list the three Holt, Rinehart, Winston books of roughly the standard size which actually weren't primary reprint books (because they consisted mostly of previously reprinted strips) it would look like this:

Starting with the 1985 strips, the main reprints were part of the Peanuts Collector Series. During this period, Schulz did some single-panel strips that are in the Collector series but not in the Fawcett version, presumably because they did not reformat well into the space provided. Some other strips are missing from the Fawcetts as well.

They decided to make their collections complete, not skipping any strips, and issued them in reverse order. Not only are the Sundays in color for 1996-2000, for 1997-2000 they even colored the daily strips!
